Graeme Simsion is a full-time writer. Previously an IT consultant and educator, he wrote his first book in 1994 (the standard reference on data modelling). Graeme's debut novel, The Rosie Project, has had phenomenal success in over forty-two countries and has sold over half a million copies to date. The Rosie Effect is his second novel. Graeme lives in Australia with his wife Anne, a professor of psychiatry and published author, and their two children.

Ja, "Rosie Project" war toll, der Humor, die ideenreichen Schilderungen, überraschenden Situationen...Und dann das... manche Rezensionen hatten mich ja schon vorgewarnt, das sei so eine Fortsetzung, ein Wiederaufkochen eines Humors, der bisher gut funktioniert hat, aber inzwischen bemüht wirkt...Jedenfalls konnte ich ein paar Seiten noch lachen, aber alles wiederholt sich so plump und primitiv, dass ich letztlich das Buch beiseite gelegt habe, ohne es zu Ende zu lesen...Also deshalb rate ich davon ab... schon alleine deshalb, um das gute Gefühl nach "Rosie Project" nicht zu zerstören...
Der Vorgänger war einfach sensationell viel besser. In diesem Teil wird Rosie plötzlich anstrengend, was zu einem unerwartet hohen Anteil ernster, manchmal sogar trauriger Passagen führt. Im Grunde wäre das ja nicht schlimm, gehört schließlich auch zum Leben dazu, aber ich habe halt die Fortsetzung des Humorfeuerwerks aus dem ersten Teil erwartet.Am Ende dreht sich auch alles ein bisschen im Kreis und ich hab auch mal den Zusammenhang nicht mehr erkannt. Letztendlich ist Don aber zu liebenswert um ihm noch mehr Sterne abzuziehen.
Nachdem das Rosie Project den, im Augenblick in Fernsehserien sehr erfolgreichen, Typus des sozial inkompetenten, aber genialen Asperger-Autisten noch recht frisch aufbereitet hat, geht der Geschichte hier zunehmend die Puste aus. Dons Hilflosigkeit in romantischen Dingen, von denen das erste Buch gut zehren konnte, verschwindet völlig hinter einer zickigen, zunehmend unsympathischen Rosie, der er anscheinend nichts recht machen kann. Auch Abwechslung fehlt, wo das erste Buch einem roten Faden anhand Rosies Vaterschaftstests folgen konnte, dreht sich dieses Buch im Kreis, indem das Handlungsmuster von Rosies Schwangerschaft und Überforderung und Dons Unverständnis ihrer Launen immer und immer wieder wiederholt wird, ohne Fortschritte in der Handlung zu erzielen oder einen Spannungsbogen aufrecht zu erhalten. Bemüht mit in den Mix geworfen, werden alte Figuren, wie Gene, die auch nicht ansprechender wirken, als im ersten Band.Fazit:Ein einziger interessanter Protagonist reicht nicht, ein bisschen Handlung wäre diesem Buch durchaus gut angestanden.
Don Tillman is a clever Australian professor. His logical thought processes are unbeatable. His world is black or white. Yes or No, Possible or impossible. Don Tillman has autism. It doesn't hinder his research or professional qualities but it does make him a difficult person to deal with if you don't understand how he ticks. He is a very upright and honest person who is lovable in his own way. Just somewhat complicated for the rest of the world.In the first book, The Rosie Project, he sets out to find a wife by way of an extremely complicated questionnaire. Hardly surprisingly, he can't find that perfect wife. However, during the search he meets Rosie, helps her to trace her biological father by using his unquestionable scientific talents and Rosie becomes the long sought-after wife.The Tillmans move from Melbourne to New York for this second book.In this sequel, Rosie is pregnant. Totally unexpected for Don who has great trouble identifying with fatherhood and his contribution to Rosie's pregnancy is to oversee her diet, her stress levels and her life in general. Rosie rebels against Don's regimes and a split seems inevitable.Trying to lower Rosie's stress levels, Don gets caught up in a massive, well... not exactly a lie... but prevarication - so as not to unduly worry Rosie. The prevarication is caused by his lack of understanding for other people's actions and their misunderstanding of his actions. His own thought processes are so straightforward he can't envisage how others might see him and his behaviour.Don is helped along the way by Gene, his promiscuous Australian friend who really does understand other people; by George an elderly pop star in whose flat Don and Rosie live and by Dave - an overweight heating engineer, whose wife Sonia is also pregnant.Don's friends, Gene, Dave and Sonia and George all help Rosie and Don to get things back together and how this happens makes for a great read, especially when you follow Don Tillman's own personal logic and thinking. Highly recommended.
Habe mich sehr auf die Fortsetzung gefreut, da der erste Teil für mich ein Überraschung war. Es war mal etwas anderes und hatte seinen eigenen Humor und witzige Szenen.Nun habe ich genau das Gleiche für den zweiten Teil erwartet (auch wenn man nun die Eigenheiten des Hauptcharakters schon kennt) und wurde enttäuscht. Ich fand vieles zäh und gezwungen. Generell empfand ich über große Strecken die Grundstimmung zu negativ und es sind für meinen Geschmack zu wenige überraschende Wendungen eingebaut worden.Trotzdem habe ich die Charaktäre lieb gewonnen und habe mich gefreut etwas mehr aus ihrem Leben zu erfahren.
As often in sequels, this one doesn't quite reach the niveau of the first book in the series.Partly probably, because Don Tillman's quirky ways are no novelty any more, but partly also because it is much more serious than its predecessor and sometimes even has a depressive touch.It's not bad in general, but I must say, I could have done without it.
Einfach gute Unterhaltung. So viel erkennt man wieder. Und wieder ein Buch, um seine Englisch-Kenntnisse zu erhalten. Leicht zu lesen. Gibts aber auch auf deutsch. Obwohl das Original in solchen Fällen einfach noch einen Tick besser ist.
THE ROSIE EFFECT reads much like its predecessor, ‘The Rosie Project’ and is recommendable to all who already enjoyed reading about the main character Don Tillmann. Seeing as the reader already knows Don, some of the plot’s turns and twists are less of a surprise than in the first novel. Still, the book mostly convinces to be of a certain authenticity on the part of Don Tillmann and is an entertaining read.
